Explanation

The ELTIF Regulation of 2015 was meant to channel private capital into companies, infrastructure and property. The format only took off with the revision (“ELTIF 2.0”) that has applied since January 2024: it removed the EUR 10,000 minimum investment for retail investors, relaxed investment limits and made redemptions during the fund’s life easier. Since then many ELTIFs have been launched as evergreen funds with regular dealing dates.

ELTIF is a label for the legal form, not a verdict on quality. An ELTIF can be closed-ended or semi-liquid, invest in private equity, credit or infrastructure and have very different costs. Retail investors may only subscribe after a suitability assessment. Besides ELTIFs there are semi-liquid funds in other legal forms, such as Luxembourg Part II SICAVs, some of which are also distributed in Germany.

In the database

72 of the 139 active funds in the database are ELTIFs; according to the ESMA register, 68 of them are also authorised for retail investors. The other 67 are semi-liquid funds in other legal forms, mainly Luxembourg Part II SICAVs.
