Glossary › Redemption frequency
The redemption frequency states how often a fund buys back units – daily, monthly, quarterly or less often.
An exchange-traded fund can be sold on any trading day. A semi-liquid fund only opens windows for this: on each dealing date it determines the net asset value and pays out the requests received, within its gate. Most funds deal quarterly, some monthly, a few more often.
A high frequency sounds like more liquidity, but is only partly that. Many monthly dealing funds still cap redemptions per quarter, and with a long notice period there are weeks between request and payment anyway. Frequency is therefore one of four factors that together determine the time until cash – alongside notice period, settlement period and lock-up.
Of the 139 active funds, 97 redeem units quarterly, 37 monthly or more often – 3 of them daily or weekly – and 2 only once a year.
